From the way this interview went you might think King Tuff is a man of few words – and you’d be right. But hey his answers are so sharp and witty he literally had us rolling on the floor in fits – honestly just thinking about it has started us off again. So if you have a couple of minutes to spare dig in to the amusing world of King Tuff – we’re sure you won’t regret it. Oh and he’s got a rather nifty, self-titled album out – it’s full of hooks and garage-ramblings – well worth checking.
Bowlegs: So where did you get the name King Tuff?
KT: I named it after my ultra buff physique.
Bowlegs: Are you still playing in your other bands like Happy Birthday and Witch? Do you rotate between them all?
KT: No those bands are dead – but we’re gonna make more albums.
Bowlegs: Is King Tuff all your own? Who else is involved? How is it different from the other bands?
KT: It’s just me. So far I’ve had a rotating cast of characters playing in my band. It’s different cuz it sounds different.
Bowlegs: Did I read that you have a guitar called Jazijoo?
KT: I don’t know if u read that but yes it’s true, jazijoo luvs yoo.
Bowlegs: Unusual World is a great – why is it an unusual world?
KT: Whats not unusual about it? Nothing makes sense.
Bowlegs: Do you set out from the off to write either an acoustic track or a garage-rock tune?
KT: They are all just songs to me. Most of them start off acoustic. I need a garage so I can make a garage song.
Bowlegs: When you are alone and stoned do you come up with your best work?
KT: It depends on how alone and how stoned I am.
Bowlegs: Who designed the great album cover?
KT: Me and my brother luke.
Bowlegs: How did you hook up with Sub Pop?
KT: They hunted me down and fed me treats.
Bowlegs: What’s the Detroit scene like at the moment? Got any tips on upcoming bands from the area?
KT: I wasn’t allowed to go out on the scene when I was recording there so I really have no idea.
Bowlegs: And finally what albums have you been digging in 2012?
KT: Hectors Pets, Chris Weisman- Beatleboro, Hunx- Hairdresser Blues, Natural Child- For The Love of the Game.
