WHY?: Sod in the Seed

Why

No shit, WHY? are back at their best for passing shots of Sod in the Seed. This is Yoni Wolf leaving his over-cooked Eskimo Snow set and tightening it up tenfold.

You know it as the title track kicks in with its compressed rhythms and fast-talking, smart thinking Wolf. Just check the opening line, “I make decent cash, I’m a minor star”. You got it – here he is spewing observations coated with deep thought. I’m not sure there are many that can compete with Wolf on this.

Someone follows with fast-paced percussion and some staccato guitar action, randomly hitting the chords before lounging into a chorus of half-speed nostalgia. That laid-back vibe runs into The Plan, an acoustic saunter with a half-sung vocal.

And, like it started, the EP closes on another high. Shag Carpet is like baroque pop mating with rap, what with its stuttering beats and cut-up choral backdrop. If this is the departure lounge before we board the forthcoming full-length then I for one am hoping there’s no delays.
