Surfer Blood’s sublime debut album, Astro Coast, spring-boarded the band into a world of indie fame, acclaim, and hearty slaps on the back. But that was last year and momentum can be easily lost in the rapidly shifting digital music domain. Can their new EP, Tarot Classics, keep the wheels on the Surfer Blood wagon rolling? In short – yes.
If Astro Coast was an assured debut, then Tarot Classics is simply brimming with confidence. I’m Not Ready sounds like a song that’s been around for a while. It’s almost like it shouldn’t be on a new release – its comfortable, indie pop, sing-a-long feel gives the impression of it being a familiar favourite.
Miranda and Voyager Reprise seamlessly link into one another, both showcasing the heavy Florida sunshine influence in the band’s grooves, while Drinking Problem sees the band switching pace and mood by going for a more downbeat sound.
This is the work of a band that could be producing high quality music for some time to come. Then again, we might have jinxed it and they could split up before 2012 comes around. We hope not though.
Tarot Classics is out on October 24 and you can listen to Miranda here: Miranda
