After a successful start to 2011, which took in a Mercury Award nominated debut album, James Blake is getting back into the business of releasing EPs. And ‘Enough Thunder’, released on October 10, picks up where his excellent debut album left off.
And at times it really does feel like an extension of his long-player. The sublime use of space and silence is still there, punctuating the songs in all the right places. And Blake’s vocals still ride close to Antony Hegarty’s in both pitch and emotional value.
Opening track ‘Once We All Agree’ seems simplistic at face value, beginning with Blake’s vocals, a plodding piano and a sample all playing off each other. But Blake manages to weave these stripped down elements to create something beautiful, giving the song space and time to build momentum – stretching the tenderness to breaking point.
‘Fall Creek Boys Choir’, the recently released duet with Bon Iver, has its place (and you have a listen to that below), as does an inspired cover of Joni Mitchell’s ‘A Case of You’. It all adds up to six songs full of solemnity, subtly and sincerity, underlining Blake’s unique talent.
