Back in August we posted Exitmusic’s track ‘The Sea’, impressed by the starkness, the power, and the sheer creepiness of it. As the opening song of the New York based duo’s debut EP, ‘From Silence’, it acted as the warning sign of what was to come – the creaking half open door to the house you know you shouldn’t go in but can’t resist: enter if you dare; enter if you want to feel the chill of beauty and horror running down your spine and through your veins.
Singer Aleksa Palladino (who starred in ‘Boardwalk Empire’ as Angela Darmody, fact fans) sings as if she might be either: a) casting a spell on you; b) begging you for her life; c) making you beg for your life; d) seducing you; or e) all of the above. Her voice has such a beautiful range and depth of emotion that it draws you in and keeps you there. And that’s where you stay for the duration of this four song EP.
In ‘Modern World’, Palladino’s vocals spill out the words “on the run from the modern age” in an epic fashion, riding perfectly in front of the throbbing sonic background. ‘The Hours’ is a bit more of a recliner, containing enough sun-setter fuzz and swaying glory, while ‘The Silence’ turn up the creepy dial, with its trudging drums, buzzing guitars and effect-laden vocals.
If the band’s opening track, ‘The Sea’, set the tone for the rest of the EP, then ‘From Silence’ has set the bar for any future album they have planned. And that bar is high.
‘From Silence’ is out on October 4.
