Stealing Sheep are an all-girl trio based in Liverpool, and their new EP, ‘I Am The Rain’, is a strangely hypnotic set of songs built mainly from harmonies, percussion and ramshackle guitars. When we discovered the three musicians were from Norway, Canada and England, the band’s varying influences made more sense – clearly they all have experiences to share.
It opens with the psychedelic title track, where the guitars bend beneath the intent three-part vocal and tambourine – it’s like a woozy folk trip.
It is undoubtedly the voices that lift the band above their contemporaries, meaning the accompaniments need only be minimal – from the arpeggio piano in the excellent ‘Secrets’ to the tribal rhythm within ‘Noah’s Days’.
Thankfully the trio steer clear of twee, instead creating a set of acoustic, leftfield melodies with ever-changing tempos and paths. It all makes for a refreshing listen, and hints at a whole heap of ideas that will surely be explored very soon.
