Icona Pop – Nights Like This

The Swedes sure do know a thing or two about pop. And listening to Icona Pop’s EP, ‘Nights Like This’, you’ll realise how effortless they can make it seem. The release is a master-class in how to make fluid synth led electronic pop.

While ‘Nights Like This’ possesses more commercial value and less edge than The Knife, it manages to smuggle in some guilt free appeal along with its gooey choruses and dance-a-tronic melodies. Opening track ‘Lovers to Friends’ has the kind of chart-friendly vibe that might furrow a brow or two on first listen. But once you accept it for what it is – unashamedly pure electronic pop – then you move on and forget about betraying any misguided sense of loyalty to chart music avoidance.

‘Manners’ is a darker movement, with a forceful, yet uplifting shout-a-long chorus. While the title track, ‘Nights Like This’, is thoughtful in its build up before bursting out in pop-like abandon.

The final track, ‘Sun Goes Down’, well … you can listen to that below, but it’s safe to say it’s a drifting throb of a track, different from the three preceding songs in that its pop-pill is harder to swallow, with its dense layers, murky choppy synths and a blend of menacing male and pleading female vocals. But it’s better because of it.

‘Nights Like This’ is released on October 10.
