Carol Kleyn - Love Has Made Me Stronger

Is this the original Joanna Newsom from back in the day? The day being 1976 and this being a self-released lost gem from Carol Kleyn. Whoever Drag City are employing to scour the second-hand record stores they are doing a sterling job – just a few weeks back they gave us the excellent These Trails and now we get this piece of angelic-folk.

Carol Kleyn was primarily a Harp-player yet piano fills many of the spaces here too. Every track is beautifully entwined with Kleyn’s wavering tones and warm arrangements  - all of which epitomises much of the Folk sounds from the late seventies.

‘Baby Come Close’ is much like a Joni Mitchell high played on a Harp –  managing to  flow, pick and strum with an earthy affection. ‘Oo Like The Mountain’ meanwhile is a more sombre note – Kleyn’s voice stunning across the strangely hypnotic backing.

Please be warned, the title track will break your heart and ‘Higher then High’ won’t hesitate in scaling new heights with its bright and far-reaching attitude. And there is more – pretty much every track has something to offer –  all owned by Kleyn’s own passionate delivery.

‘Love Has Made Me Stronger’ is a truly inspiring record that is back where it belongs – and hopefully it will get the attention it has deserved all along.

Drag City are in fact re-issuing all three of Kleyn’s records (this being her first) and you can get a bio from the musician if you head here: Carol Kleyn on Drag City
