These Trails – These Trails

Trippy, Hawaiian Folk anyone? Listening to These Trails is quite an experience, and a positive one at that. Originally released in 1973 Drag City have plucked it from certain obscurity –  re-packaged and re-issued –  and are releasing it this very month.

The Hawaiian band was primarily Margaret Morgan, Dave Choy, Carlos Pardeiro and Patrick Cockett – and together they created songs from flutes, acoustics, synths and percussion – and some pure, folk-infused vocals.

From the fantastic, swaying on a sandy beach ‘Our House In Hanalei’ to the dark, sombre ‘Hello Lou’, the record is a unique mix of organic musicianship and mutating genres. The latter track being a Bowlegs’ favourite with its close harmony and spiralling, saddened acoustic.

Things can get rather strange too – listen to the acoustic picked, wavering, synth-frazzled ‘Sowed a Seed’ – bending and mutating between a piece of folk and a piece of prog-weirdness.

Singer Morgan has a gentle, warm vocal – and on tracks like ‘Rapt Attention’ she takes centre stage atop a tapping rhythm and winding guitar.

To think These Trails were nearly lost in 1973 – yet thanks to Drag City we all get the chance to frolic on the Hawaiian beaches and reflect in the Honolulu hills.
