Max Tundra – Mastered By Guy At The Exchange

Posted on 29 May 2011 by Bowlegs

Bowlegs can rest easy on this one, we never covered Max Tundra’s ‘Mastered by Guy at the Exchange’ for the simple fact that we didn’t exist. But listening to it now does make us wonder when Max Tundra, who is actually Ben Jacobs, might return (his last album, ‘Parallax Error Beheads You’, was released in 2008).

‘Mastered by Guy at the Exchange’ was Jacobs’ second release as Tundra (his first with vocals), and is literally turning in a hundred directions all at once. Electronics and synth-induced Pop rarely sounds so complex, buzzing with ideas – each song varying in tempo, sounds, vocals and whatever else its got on offer.

‘Merman’ has a nervous twitch of a beat – yet with Jacobs’ vocal and some brass-lined synths it holds together the twisted melody. The excellent ‘Gondry’ – a musical request to the director to come direct him – is like a club track turned up on the pitcher; Jacobs’ talkative vocals keep it hushed as keyboards solo, bubble and spiral overhead.

Our personal favourite is ‘Hilted’, it bundles in some distorted guitars for a fleeting glimpse before the whole track is eaten up by a muted machine, stepping back out with some staccato rhythms and acoustic guitars.

You can pick any track from this record and be amazed at the arrangement and the UK musicians’ knack for stitching together five songs into one. Hopefully we will be hearing from Max Tundra in the very near future.
