Kelley Stoltz’s love for all things sixties is no secret, his back-catalogue is scattered with melodic pop, harmonised hooks and summer sounds. Yet his new album, ‘To Dreamers’ is said to be a bit more post-punk (whilst maintaing his signature talent for cathcy tunes). With the album due early October on Sub Pop Bowlegs got in early with a Call back.
Bowlegs: Which album has been a major influence in your life, and why?
Kelley Stoltz: The first four Echo and the Bunnymen records. They were the first band I felt were mine – they got me to start a little band and bang away on a guitar, dress cool, and get out the aqua net hairspray and change my whole style.
Bowlegs: What was the last album you bought?
Kelley Stoltz: It was a 45 – Bunker Hill’s ‘Hide & Seek pts 1 & 2’.
Bowlegs: Which bands have you been listening to this week?
Kelley Stoltz: Television Personalities, Art Pepper, ‘Good God’ Funk-Gospel Compilation.
Bowlegs: Name an up-and-coming band Bowlegs should look out for?
Kelley Stoltz: Kelley Stoltz.
Bowlegs: What was the last gig you went to?
Kelley Stoltz: Eddy Current Suppression Ring with Thee Oh Sees. Paul McCartney really, but that could only be called a ‘gig’ by Sir Paul.
Bowlegs: Who is the best band you have ever shared a bill with?
Kelley Stoltz: Bunnymen, Raconteurs, Dirtbombs…
Bowlegs: What was the first gig you ever went to, and who did you go with?

Bowlegs: What made you realise that being a musician was the career of choice?
Kelley Stoltz: My first tour of Australia in 2003 – had a blast and made some money.
Bowlegs: What is your favourite music documentary?
Kelley Stoltz: Metallica’s ‘Some Kind of Monster’ and ‘Off the Charts’, a movie about the song-poem business – awesome!

Kelley Stoltz: ‘My Kid Could Paint That’ – about a family dealing with a child prodigy painter and the press who try to disprove the kid’s talents.
Bowlegs: Name three great books Bowlegs must read?
Kelley Stoltz: ‘The Manual – How to Have a Number One the Easy Way’ by Bill Drummond; ‘Head On/Repossessed’ by Julian Cope; ‘Willard and his Bowling Trophies’ by Richard Brautigan.

Bowlegs: What was the last thing that made you laugh out loud?
Kelley Stoltz: A silly song I made up – ‘We’re gonna hug the demons out’.
Bowlegs: Do you think music videos are important and do you like making them?
Kelley Stoltz: I think they can be cool – haven’t made many, don’t really have an opinion.
Bowlegs: Are albums still important or is it more about individual tracks?
Kelley Stoltz: Albums.
Bowlegs: What do you have planned for the next six months?
Kelley Stoltz: Release new album and then lots of touring, meeting nice folks here and there.
Bowlegs: What is on your iPod?
